A monotype involves a printmaking technique that creates a singular image. This subset of printmaking is closely related to the etching printing process, but provides a more spontaneous expression. Monotype artists are sometimes referred to as “Painterly Printmakers”. One goal of the etching process is to create an edition of perfectly replicated prints. Conversely, the monotype has an edition size of one. Each print starts with a blank plate. The plate is inked and the ink manipulated to create an image that is completely unique. The plate and paper are then hand cranked through an etching press. This process presses the plate into the paper, transferring the image. The indentation in the paper is the result of this pressure. The plate is wiped clean and the process begins again to create another unique image.
